TV News – Spring 2023

Newscast Producer

As producer, I oversaw the entire production of the news cycle. I received three packages from my instructor that I could use to build an 8:00 newscast. I wrote additional readers, voicers, and the open and close to complete my scripts. I built and timed my rundown. I met with my anchors, marked up scripts, and made changes based on their feedback. I learned that anchor feedback can be very valuable to a successful production. We had 45 minutes to practice in the studio before shooting. I worked closely with my Director, Skyler, to make the challenging decision to cut 2 stories from my rundown during the practice. My production came down to an almost perfect 8 minutes.

Anchor

As an anchor, my job started when I met my producer to go over the scripts. I read through them and made suggested changes to make sure I could understand the stories and clearly read them out loud. On production day, I worked closely with the director, teleprompter operator, and sound crew to make sure I was following my cues. I really loved being an anchor, it reminds me of my favorite parts of my first career. I love standing up and talking to people. Jasmine Lawrence, GSU Alum, produced this newscast.

Standup Open

Digital Journalism gave me my first opportunity to stand in front of a camera and talk to an audience. Working with my sister as a camera operator, I set up this opening shot to visually bring perspective to an important issue of home cybersecurity. I talk to an expert in the field about how to properly configure home wifi.

Three-part Series

As my final project as a grad student for Digital Journalism, I produced a 3-part story. Every year, Reynoldstown community hosts a Thanksgiving Basket event, where they gather as a community to build Thanksgiving dinner baskets to deliver to seniors and families in the community. I followed them from early morning packaging to delivery at Mercy House Senior Center. This is part one of the series. The rest of the series is available on my YouTube Channel.

Profile

This is a profile on Galette, a local bakery in Avondale Estates, that has been a favorite of mine since they opened way back when as a countertop service in Inman Park. I loved their bakery and story so much, I wanted to share it with the class. I enjoyed interviewing both owners at the same time, because it gave me a different perspective than if I had interviewed them separately. We also had to be flexible because Ashley’s son was sick with the flu.

Investigative Reporting

For this story, I investigated an issue piling up in my community. Many people in Avondale had noticed that Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market had stopped recycling cardboard and there was a growing mountain of recyclables getting soaked in the rain. I went over and asked around until I found answers. Along the way I learned about their mission to provide an important service to the community.

Taking Space & Time

This was my very first piece of visual storytelling at Georgia State. Our assignment was to tell a story entirely with picture and natural sound. In this piece, I emphasize the importance of taking time and space in a busy schedule, something that helped me find balance throughout grad school.

Digital Editing – spring 2024

Oyster Farming

Two years later, this piece showcases the growth in my digital editing capability. I significantly expanded my skills in this semester, really drilling down to learn how to use technical editing tools in Premiere Pro. This assignment used stock materials.

Over the last two years, I have grown so much as a journalist. This is one of my very first interviews, on the top of a parking garage in downtown Atlanta. I shot the video with my phone in my hand and a wired lavalier that I had no idea what to do with.
